Description

Engraved by J.C.M. Rae. 9 x 12 inch sheet with 5 1/2 x 7 inch steel engraved image. Pl.25. extracted from larger volume. Foxing in the margins. Shows night sky with stars, camp fire and six Native American men and women performing mourning rituals beneath the funeral platform. Probably extracted from Mary Eastman' s book The American Aboriginal Portfolio (1853). Captain Seth Eastman was a career army officer and talented artist, widely appreciated today for his ethnographic detail. He set out to preserve a visual record of Indian life which was undergoing rapid change. See Howes H-17; Sabin 21682
