On a lonely basalt ridge overlooking the Tularosa Basin of New Mexico is inscribed what is perhaps the most astonishing collection of sacred writings in North America. More than 21,000 petroglyphs have been recorded and are known o be the work of the inhabitants of a Jornada Mogollon village near the base of the ridge.
