Excellent edition of rare 19thc. publications with useful annotations. Related to the 35th parallel his expedition and the new trail they created provided a route for an increasing number of covered-wagon caravans. Whipple's "itinerary" remains one of the most interesting, authoritative and human journals on the Southwest, as it was before settlement. This annotated journal is a fitting tribute to the distinctive service which the officers and men of the American Army- Whipple, March, Fremont, and others rendered the U.S. in welding a western empire to the Union.
