Shows night sky with stars, camp fire and six Native American men and women performing mourning rituals beneath the funeral platform. Probably extracted from Mary Eastman' s book The American Aboriginal Portfolio (1853). Captain Seth Eastman was a career army officer and talented artist, widely appreciated today for his ethnographic detail. He set out to preserve a visual record of Indian life which was undergoing rapid change. See Howes H-17; Sabin 21682. Item #11839
